Portia was the rich heiress of Belmont. She was fair and fairer than that word of wondrous virtues. So, her father had hedged her and scanted her by his wit, stating that one who wins the lottery of casket wins Portia's hand in marriage. And therefore, her right to voluntary choosing was prevented from her. So, to obey her father, she could neither choose whom she likes, nor refuse whom she dislikes.
