As Jawaharlal Nehru said in the constituent assembly,"We could not have a directly elected President and not give him real powers."

According to our constitution the president is only a nominal executive and the real power are vested in the council of ministers headed by the prime minister.

However during framing of constitution some members of constitution assembly objected the indirect election of the president.

However the constitution makers chose the indirect election due to the following reasons.

It would have been anomalous to have the president elected directly by the people and not give him any real power.

Due to vast size of electorate it would have been a time consuming and costly process.
