Why proteoglycans are digested in extra cellular matrix by protease?

Protease enzymes breaks the peptide bonds between amino acids in proteoglycan. So proteoglycan protein part is digested by the help of Protease enzymes. Protease catalyses the hydrolysis of peptide bond by adding a water molecule.

Proteoglycans are a major component of the animal extracellular matrix, the "filler" substance existing between cells in an organism. Here they form large complexes, both to other proteoglycans, to hyaluronan, and to fibrous matrix proteins, such as collagen.
