Why protons and neutrons are collectively called as nucleons?

Answer:

Neutron and proton exist within the nucleus of the atom. Just to study them together , they are called as nucleons.

So we can say that , particles within the nucleus are known nucleons. Basically nucleons are classified into two- neutron and proton.

So finally we can say that there is no reason to called ‘nucleons’ as 'nucleons'. It's just a classification.
