Why pure gold is not suitable for making ornaments

24 carat gold, or pure gold is very soft and bends easily, hence it cannot be used for making jewellery. So, some amount of other metal, (usually copper and silver) is added in order to make gold a bit harder and give it a shape. For eg. gold jewelleries of 22 carat gold consists of 22 parts of gold and 2 parts of other metal.
