Railway transport is difficult in northern states of India because
1) They have hilly and rough rocky land surface creating difficulty for construction.
2) The hilly slopes have dense forest.
3) There is also general lack of demand because of poor economy.
4) There are many rivers distributed over the plains. In order to construct, these rivers need to be bridged.
