Why reduced voltage is used for starting large power rating squirrel cage induction motor?

When rated voltage applied across the stator of induction motor,it draws excessively high currents from supply.
It is similar to applying rated voltage across the primary of transformer when secondary is short circuited.
The rotor contains large current at s=0
so stator draws large current from supply to control this reduced voltage is used.
