Hello!!
This is your answer.
Reproduction : Only living beings reproduce, but even it is not a defining property of living. Do you wonder why?
Reproduction is a characteristic of living organisms. It can't be called as a defining property of living. It is because all living organisms don't reproduce.
Let's talk in detail....
Reproduction refers to the production of progeny less or more similar to those of parents. Organisms reproduce by two methods -
⏩ Sexually where two parents are involved and chances of variation is much.
⏩ Asexually where single parent is involved.
At lower levels, organisms reproduce through different asexual methods.
e.g. Fungi reproduce by spore formation, Planaria reproduce by regeneration, algae can reproduce through fragmentation, amoeba and plasmodium reproduce by fission and more.
Larger or complex animals mostly reproduce by sexual method. In sexual reproduction, the sex cells or gametes from the father and mother fuses (called fertilization) to form zygote which after several changes born as baby.
Of course, no non living thing is capable of reproduction but still reproduction can't be taken as defining property of living.
It is because, there are many living organisms which do not reproduce.
For example - mules, strile, worker bees, (worker bees are female but they do not reproduce; only the queen bee mates and lays egg) and infertile human couple are not able to reproduce. So, reproduction can't be taken as a defining property of living.
