RER or Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum is rough in nature due to the presence of ribosomes, which are attached to its surface.

  • Endoplasmic reticulum can be of two forms- the rough endoplasmic reticulum( RER) and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum( SER).
  • Endoplasmic reticulum is a series of flattened sac like structure present in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells and has several functions ranging from synthesis, modification, folding and transport of proteins.
  • The ribsomes present in the RER are responsible for the synthesis of proteins. Therefore, the RER is largely responsible for protein synthesis, modification and its transport.
  • SER, on the other hand, is involved in the synthesis of fat, detoxification of chemicals, etc.
