Exothermic Reactions:

Exothermic reactions are chemical transformations which release energy in the form of heat. The energy from an exothermic reaction can be used to power an endothermic reaction.

Answer and Explanation:

Respiration is exothermic because the products of respiration have more stable bonds than the reactants. Respiration is the step-wise breakdown of sugars to produce carbon dioxide and water. The carbon-hydrogen bonds in sugars are less stable than the carbon-oxygen and hydrogen-oxygen bonds in the products which means more energy is released in forming these bonds than what is absorbed to break the bonds in the reactants. This makes the overall process exothermic.
