Respiration is essential for humans because respiration is the process which enables us to obtain energy from the food we have acquired. If we take in food and the food is digested then also we wont get any energy if respiration does not occur. This is because the oxygen inhaled oxidises the food molecules(mostly in form of glucose after digestion) present in the cells which in turn releases carbon dioxide, water and energy (in the form of ATP).
