During respiration, glucose molecules are converted to other molecules in a series of steps. They finally end up as carbon dioxide and water. The reactionis exothermic because the C=O and O-H bonds in the products are so much more stable than the bonds in the reactants.

Hello friend,
As we know exothermic reaction is a kind of reaction in which energy or heat is release.
And as during respiration glucose (simpler and smaller substances formed by breakdown of food) react with oxygen give out energy ,water and carbon dioxide.
Thus, it is known as exothermic reaction.
