Here,  respiration is the process of taking in oxygen and giving out carbon-dioxide by us (humans or heterotrophs). Why is it known as gaseous exchange? It is because we take in oxygen and release carbon-dioxide inside our lungs (where the gaseous exchange take place).

Therefore, respiration is known as gaseous exchange.
