respiration is essential because it keeps us alive as every living cell in the body needs a continuous supply of oxygen. inside the cell, oxygen combines with food molecules in a chemical reaction which releases energy. respiratory system starts by air enters the body through the nostrils and passes into the nasal cavities. from here, the air passes into the pharynx or throat where it has to joined with the air that has entered the system through the mouth.
