Consider a situation when 2 persons are sitting in 2 buses. When both buses move in same speed each person appears stationary to the other even if the are moving. Also when one bus moves at a higher speed, then you get to to see that the other person is not stationary anymore and his speed to you will now depend on the speed at which you are moving. Hence we say that rest and motion are relative,

Suppose, if we are sitting near the window of a moving car. When you see outside the trees will appear to be moving backward. But to a person standing on the the roadside they will appear stationary. You will find that the person sitting next to you in the car is at rest while both of you seem to be in motion to a person standing outside.

Explanation:

Therefore, an object may appear at rest with respect to some object and may appear in motion with respect to others . This means that rest and motion are relative terms .It is the point of observation and surroundings of an object that suggest whether it is at rest or in motion .
