why rice is cultivated and used as stapel food in kashmir and not wheat

The Kashmir valley can grow both, wheat and paddy, but only in summer months. There is no crop in the winters. ... Wheat is the staple food in Jammu region, whilerice is for the Kashmir region. Ladakh used to have barley as the staple food, but it is being replaced by wheat now a days.
