It is because the stiochiometric ratiofor diesel engines is higher thangasoline engines. The fuel air mixing takes in the combustion chamber itself and is not a homogeneous mixture. The diesel fuel is sprayed through injector nozzles. Thus the air fuelratios are higher which makes themixture lean.
