why rights should be given to citizens in a democracy

Ideally speaking, people in a democracy will get basic rights (food, clothing, shelter and right to life) only if they have the power to choose their own representatives.

In the absence of democracy. only handful of rich and influential people get benefit. Interests of larger masses are ignored.
