Why robert hooke called little boxes of honeycomb as cells

because he saw that the structure of cell is just like as a honey comb like structure.....
he called them compartment of cell...

Robert Hooke is termed as father of cytology..
In the year 1665, he observed a dead cork slice under the simplest microscope.The structures he witnessed were tiny honeycomb like compartments.
In the Latin language, small rooms are termed as cell and hence he gave the name cell.
