The Cork was made up of many tiny units which Hooke called cells.

In 1665, Robert Hooke, an English scientist examined thin slices of cork under a microscope, he saw many tiny box-like structures that resembled the structure of a honeycomb. Hooke called these time structures 'cells'.
And from here starts the theory of cells.
