Why rocks are harder inside than outside

the outer portion of the rocks undergoes  weathering and becomes very weak ,
mean while the inner portion is well protected .so inner part is more harder than outer part.

the outer portion of the rock experiences many changes in weather and become weak due to the outer forces and also preasure inside the rock is greater than out side
