As per the HC directions, it is mandatory for the residents living within municipal limits to paint the rooftops of their buildings with either red or green colour.The Himachal Pradesh high court in 2003 and 2007 had issued the directions to paint the rooftops to give the hill town a uniform look that otherwise was distorted due to the mushrooming of concrete structures.
In February 2006, Shimla Municipal Corporation had amended the building bylaws making it mandatory for all the building, including private houses and government buildings, within the municipal limits to paint their roofs.
