RutherFord Used Gold foil in his experiment because gold has very High Malleability. He could easily obtain a thin sheet of layer . It was around 1000 atoms thick

His experiment was (alpha Particle scattering exp), he just wanted to see if there was any space between the atoms . some of the particles passed , some reflected . The reflection was caused due the nucleus.
