a cell is not undergoing mitotic cell division, the cell is in interphase. In this phase, the chromosomes are invisible through a light microscope. ... Interphase can be divided into 3 main phases; G1( gap phase 1 ), S ( synthesis phase ) and G2 ( gap phase 2).phase. S phase (synthesis phase) is the part of the cell cycle in which DNA is replicated, occurring between G1 phase and G2 phase. Precise and accurate DNA replication is necessary to prevent genetic abnormalities which often lead to cell death or disease.

Answer:

This name “Invisible phase” was assigned when there was no electron microscope. Since the activities which goes on in 's phase' was not visible under light microscope so scientists named it as invisible phase. Soon after the discovery of electron microscope the activity of entire Interphase is clearly visible.
