British had the monopoly over saltmanufacturing and selling. The Namak Satyagrah was in protest against the steep tax the British levied on salt. ... And so, Mahatma Gandhi declared resistance to British salt policies to be the unifying theme for the civil disobedience movement and thus started Dandi March.

It is because salt is basic in nature

and it neutralise the acidity in our body

so then, we say that salt is an important issue of protest..
