Why same charges repell and opposite charges attract ? ​

Like charges repel each other; unlike charges attract. Thus, two negative charges repel one another, while a positive charge attracts a negative charge. The attraction or repulsion acts along the line between the two charges. The size of the force varies inversely as the square of the distance between the two charges.

  • If the charges must be brought nearer the lines of force being emitted by them must intersect. But since lines of force are scalar quantity they will not intersect hence the like charges are repelled.
  • Stability or we can call it neutrality. Matter wants to possess neutral state. A negative charge wants to give away its electrons to become neutral therefore it attracts positive charge towards it.
