why school bags are provided with wide straps to carry them

Because straps are necessary to hold a bag . These two straps are attached with a bag and hold bag . If straps are not in bags you have to carry bag like a polythene everywhere . Straps hepls to carry weight on shoulder and that's why you didn't get irradiated.
