It has more to do with practical limitations of LCDs, rater than design.
An LCD screen turned off, with no back light is black. It is that simple. You can make an LCD which when off it doesn't default to black, but green, but then black will be impossible to show, as all light off would be green. So black is the only option to show all colors, black included.
If e-ink screens get good enough they will be eventually be used in smartphones. E-ink screens, just like the ones used in eBook readers, can hold an image almost permanently when off, so it could be possible to have always an image showing on the front side. Also cleared e-ink screens look black.
