the second ionization energy of Mg is larger than the first because it always takes more energy to remove an electron from a positively charged ion than from a neutral atom. The third ionization energy of magnesium is enormous, however, because the Mg2+ ion has a filled-shell electron configuration.

This is because in case of 1st ionisation energy the electron is removed easily and the positively charged ion is formed.
No due to less number of electrons (original minus 1) but the same number of protons(original), the pull of protons on the electrons increases and the size of the ion decreases.
This makes it harder to remove the second electron from the ion as the proton pull is greater in ion as compared to its atom.
This is why the 2nd Ionisation energy is higher as compared to the 1st ionisation energy.
