The question is taken from The Cold Within poem .

Here the poet is writing a poem about a group of six people who were trapped in cold weather .

The second man did not put the log into the fire because he saw that in the group , there were no one from the Church.

This shows that he was aroused with racial and religious discrimination and had religious prejudices.

This prevented him from putting the log.
