ile P-waves pass through liquid and gas, S-waves do not. The reason is simple- S wave has a transverse or shearing motion of particles along its path of propagation. Since liquid and gases cannot be sheared, S-waves do not pass through them.

Answer:
The shear strength is one of the forces that hold the rock together, preventing it from falling into pieces. Liquids lack shear strength.
- This is the reason why, if you take a glass of water and suddenly remove the glass, the water will not keep its shape. ... This is why S-waves cannot propagate through liquids.
