Secularism originated in the West against the excessive interference of the Church in politics. Hence it was conceived as a concept of segregating religion and politics without criticising any religious belief. Another notion which emerged in this context was an order based on religious tolerance which Barry Kosmin says ‘Soft secularism’. India being a multi religious, multi lingual and multi cultural society beyond doubts needs tolerance. In fact tolerance is at the core of india’s plural sociocultural set up. Hence, secularism based on religious tolerance was the obvious choice for the framers of the Constitution. This contributes to ensuring India’s cultural integrity.
