when light rays falls on some metals ( semiconductors), metals tend to lose electrons, these electrons starts flowing from higher potential to lower potential inside the conductor. this phenomenon is called Photoelectric effect. semiconductors show this property dominantly. hence, in solar photovoltic cells different semiconductor materials are used.
