Why sepoys denied to open the cartridges with mouth?

The british told that the cartilage of the new Enfiled rifles are made up of pig and cow fats. Chewing or putting mouth on pig and cow fat was against religious symbol of Muslims and Hindus. So the sepoys denied to open the cartilages with mouth.

they were denied to open cartilage with their mouth because the covers of those cartilage were made by fats of cow n pig. This opposed by Hindu n Muslims because they thought that cows n pigs are religious animal. They can't eat there fats or can't open the covers from mouth.
so they were banned later on.
