Main question is why do me need shafts to transfer power or torque
And in this process u need a design which is easy to mft. And also usage .
In this process where we need such objects which can do the required work. We need circular shape as ergonomic more importantly the m.o.I of circular section is distributed near center which if was rectangle or square would be diversified due to mass at distance.
So circular objects are preferred ..now here is the twist in mechanical we call such objects as shafts Nd so circular shafts. But go to a civil or structural subject where objective is to hold hold than transfer load there we use I section or rectangular section never circular .and they are called beams
Hope it helps

Because the circular shaft has a higher bending stiffness in all directions, unlike a square or rectangle.
