The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1631, to be built in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, a Persian princess who died giving birth to their 14th child, Gauhara Begum.

Its because he favored mumtaz mahal more than the others. He had his eye upon her and described her as an illustrious lady. His other wives were only given the title of wife. After Mumtazz's death he started favoring his other wives, Begum and Fatehpuri Mahal (another one of his wives).
