The Portuguese had establisheda factory at hoogli in Bengal. we have already read that the Portuguese had a very constringe religious policy. It was often learnt that the Portuguese was lifted the orphaned children and converted them to Christianity. This was something objectionable under the rule of Mughal, who was a devout Muslim. during the reign of jahangir the Portuguese lifted to slave girlsthat belong to the mumtaz Mahal and they will not left even after it was known to the Portuguese.

in in 1631, Qasim was appointed as the nawab of Bengal and was given an authority to teach a lesson to Portuguese.

The the Portuguese were attacked ,massacred and hugli was in seige for 3 months. The Portuguese surrendered only after loss of 10000 lives. 4000 were made prisoners, who were given option to either convert Islam or face life long imprisonment.
