Shifting cultivation is the type of cultivation in which the land is burnt after growing crops and then the farmer goes on to the other land for cultivation. It is also known as slash and burn cultivation.

It is no doubt a rudimentary form of cultivation as it barrens the land and destroys the flora of the area. Also many trees are cut to practice this. It is still practiced in many places in India such as Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha.
