because acid speedify the reaction and that process of h2 and o2 generation.
Id water is distilled we use acid as it allow ions to move as distilled water dont have ions alone for electrolysisn

Water consists entirely of molecules and therefore can't conduct electricity for electrolysis . Hence , H2SO4 is added to water to ionise it and ions are formed which are Ultimately responsible for the conductance of electricity .
