The addition of oxygen to a substance is called oxidation and the removal of hydrogen from a substance is also called oxidation.

Reduction.....

The addition of hydrogen to a substance is called reduction and the removal of oxygen from a substance is also called reduction.

Magnesium ribbon should be cleaned before burning it in air to remove the oxide layer from it which may prevent or slow down the burning of magnesium ribbon
