Hiii....

Magnesium must be cleaned before burning in air because magnesium is very much reactive... If left in atmosphere for a long period of time, it reacts with atmospheric oxygen and forms a layer of magnesium oxide on its Surface...

Hence, magnesium ribbon must be cleaned before burning in air...

It is must to clean it in order to get the desired chemical reaction...

And if not cleaned the layer of MgO will interrupt in burning or it would not burn at all.....
