why should a magnesium ribbon be cleaned before burning in air

Because magnesium ribbon has a layer of magnesium oxide which forms on reaction with the air which may prevent complete burning.Therefore it is necessary to clean the the magnesium ribbon before burning.

Magnesium ribbons contains Magnesium oxide and Magnesium Sulphate, which are formed due to corrosion...
To remove all these stains thay are cleaned before burning for it to burn faster..
