Magnesium ribbon should be cleaned before burning it so that the layer of magnesium oxide which is formed by the reaction of mg with air can be removed and we can get the desired reaction

Magnesium ribbons are clean before using it as, it is reactive elements, it easily reacts with oxygen and moisture present in air, this hinder the burning of magnesium ribbons, and it form magnesium oxide , we can remove it by sandpaper
We remove the layer of magnesium oxide present on it
So that we can get the layer of magnesium only
