Always charge your phone with its own charger. Unlike laptops, smartphones use a universal charging interface the microUSB port. However, if the charger you use does not match the original, it will affect battery performance, capacity to store charge and overall life (if done repeatedly).

Every smartphone on the market can be charged with a generic phone charger 5V/2.0A. Many smartphones will even settle for less (1.5A or even 1.0A).

However, if you want your phone to be charged AS QUICKLY as with the original charger you should check the following parameters of the original charger and ensure your charger has at least the same:

Output voltage/amperage: All phones chargers have standard voltage of 5V (except of the quick charging technologies, see below), Amperage should be at least the amperage of the original charger. I.e. if the original charger comes with 1.5A output your charger should provide 1.5A or more.

Quick charging technologies: some newer phones (e.g. iPhone8, Samsung s7, Nexus 5 etc.) support different quick charging technologies, which allow to charge SIGNIFICANTLY faster by using higher voltages. If your phone/original charger supports one of these technologies then you will need a charger which supports the same technology in order to charge your phone with the same speed.

The details of the output voltage/amperage and quick charging technologies can be found on the original charger or, better, in the phone specs.

P.S. I read that the original charger of iPhone 8 or X does not support quick charging., while the phone does. You have to use other chargers (e.g. those coming with iPad) for best results.

P.P.S. The only situation when I HAD to use quick charging - when I was running Waze app navigation during the driving, on Samsung s7 phone. Waze draws so much power from the phone, that the regular charging (5V/2.0A) is not enough and I had to use a charger with Quick Charge technology
