Answer:

Child labor should be eliminated because children need to be children!

They need time to play, explore, wonder and discover their environment. They need to nurture their social skills with family and community members.

Chores is a different matter. Chores is a construct in which they understand their contribution to the community, be it family or school.

And, understand “child labor” occurs every day in many public school systems especially where Common Core is the construct of their “education.”

Early Childhood education is no longer fun (unless the teacher is able to cleverly deviate from the set curriculum). Some are able to do so especially in the presence of liberal administration.

When I objected to my mentor’s comment to my kindergarten students “This isn't playtime. You are in school now. This is serious” she replied, “I know times have changed. This is how it is now.”

I object!!! This is NOT how it has to be!! I was mortified by her attitude, and I saw it throughout the school. Teachers complained but delivered the curriculum anyway… :(

How do we change child labor???

MOTHERS, WOMEN, TEACHERS, & YES YOU, CONCERNED FATHERS, TOO!!!, WE MUST OBJECT to this ARCHAIC MANNER of treating our children!!

The educational philosophers of the past understood the nature and development of the human beings starting as children and recommended free play and exploration! (NOT WORKSHEETS!!)

The fact THAT policy makers are ignoring this truth is one cause of so many burned out/depressed/suicidal high school students.

I must add that the family life plays an important part of the child's development. And, the above is compounded if there is no support at home for stimulating self-expression and extended teaching about family values, etc.

Don't drink the Kool-Aid about “competing in the global market.” Educational systems across the globe understand the early childhood principles and implement them which may be the contributing factor to their success among other things like family values.

How do we stop child labor? Start with yourself. Say NO! Home school your child. Start a home school coop. As a teacher, incorporate early childhood principles from the masters, talk to fellow teachers, your administrators, district supervisors, etc. Form FUN learning clubs for children. Protest child labor in factories. Write politicians, the U.N., etc. Boycott companies that use child labor.

Look at yourself and start with you. -MJ
