direction means you are in which direction in North, south,east,or west
and scale shows the zoom Ness of an map

It helps you to understand what the distances on that paper map mean relative to the distance in reality.

For example if the scale reads 2 km on the map, it means that if you take that scale bar and place it anywhere on the map then the length of that scale bar on that map is equal to a distance of 2 km in the real world in that place where you placed the scale bar on the map.
