Petrol and other flammable spirits give off fumes which are effectively gasses, these can explode quite easily.
Alcohol spirits that are drunk are watered down perhaps 60% water 40% spirit, raw spirit is highly explosive, as is Petrol, it isn't the liquid, it is the gasses given off.
When you see cars explode into flames in films it is usually done using a nearly empty petrol tank as this is mainly gas, hence explosion. A gallon of petrol as gas could blow up your house and probably several neighbours houses (assuming they are all detached, if you live in flats the whole block and some neighbours) it is that powerful.
