When we are little, you are taught to read one word at a time. However, our vocabulary improves as you we older, and we’re capable of reading groups of words. But just because people are capable of this, it doesn’t mean they actually do it. Part of the reason why people read slowly is because they’ve developed a habit of reading one word at a time. This habit is commonly called “fixation.”
