In 1878, the vernacular press act was passed by the colonial government because the local newspapers were printing articles against the government. The vernacular press act gave the right to the government to censor reports and seize editorial reports written against the government. No, censorship was not effective in controlling nationalistic feelings in india. It was because despite the government control, there was an increase in number of newspapers in India. They reported about the colonial misgovernment and fuelled nationalist sentiments in India.
