Why should the maintenance functions of living organisms must go on even when they are not doing anything?

when they are not doing anything even then mentainence should be there bcoz our body needs energy even for respiration and digestive processes if these would not carried out then it is impossible for being alive. Bcoz these are fundamental processes. to uptake and formation of energy these maintence functions are necessary.
